The Kelemen Quartet was founded in Budapest in 2010 and has rapidly gained a reputation as one of the most exciting young string quartets. Its most recent achievement was winning first prize at the prestigious Premio Paolo Borciani International String Quartet Competition in 2014. As described by Ensemble magazine in 2011, the Quartet “lit a firework of emotions, wrestling with the emotion in the music” and is praised as “perhaps one of the greatest discoveries of this competition.” The Kelemen Quartet received the overall second prize, the audience prize and the Musica Viva Grand Prize at the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition in 2011, and it also received the first prize ex aequo at the Beijing International Music Competition in the same year as well as at the International Sándor Végh String Quartet Competition in Budapest in 2012.

"This was brilliant playing by any standards ...

"As an encore the Kelemen offered the Finale. Allegro vivace from Bartok’s Fifth String Quartet – an incredibly difficulty piece for any string quartet – but they played it with total confidence and conviction."
