(Jason James/Asahi Evening News/Tokyo ) ''....performances proved the Artis to be top class in the international chamber music league..'' (Alexander Arbeiter/Kurier /Vienna). This success was repeated with cycles of the complete Schubert quartets in 1997 at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, De Doelen in Rotterdam and the Musikverein in Vienna. Their recordings of Berg, Weigl, Zemlinsky and Webern have been praised internationally all over and Thomas Schulz from the German „Rondo“ Magazine wrote about:- „in the Austrian late romantic and modern repertoire the Artis Quartet is unbeatable at the moment“. In 2001 their concert at the Salzburger Mozartwoche was taped by UNITEL Video productions and broadcasted in various TV channels internationally. In 2008 a documentary film about the Artis Quartet and their work on Joseph Haydn was produced by the television channels BR Alpha, 3 SAT and ORF. The most recent recording of the AQ , quartets by Egon Wellesz, was awarded the MIDEM CLASSICAL AWARD 2009 in Cannes. In 2009 a CD with three quartets by Joseph Haydn will be released on CAMERATA Tokyo. The members of the Artis Quartet teach at the Universities of Vienna and Graz and give masterclasses around the world. After trying for the first time in 2003 the AQ is now one of the few quartets which presents the players with the exeption of the cellist standing up. Peter Schuhmayer plays a violin by Johann Rombach (2001) . Johannes Meissls A.Guarneri (1690) violin, Herbert Kefers J.B.Guadagnini (1784) viola and Othmar Müllers A.Amati, 1573) cello are on loan from the Austrian National Bank's collection of musical instruments. |

. r e v i e w s...........back to roster....up ...Beethoven, Dvorak and Willi created startlingty different sound-worlds in this concert (Wigmore Hall) given by the exiting Artis Quartet. in the first bars these players clutched the attention and held it with mesmeric intensity. Jeffrey Joseph/ The Strad / London ...At this superb concert, one felt enveloped in a wealthy, fertile harvest of genius.. it left no doubt as to the flexible, classic style and elegance of this perfectly disciplined quartet and their interpretation... Eileen Bates/ The Hongkong Standard ...they were well balanced both in volume and in style. .their idea how Mozart should be played was an unpretentious approach which riveted attention on the simple beauty of the music itseif. The tone was warm and the phrasing impeccably musical throughout. This was at last the concert that made you glad 1991 is Mozart year. Other artist try to imitate Mozart; these four are the real thing... Jason James / Asahi Evening News / Tokyo the four members of the Artis Quartet showed more than fine string playing. They offered the kind of fluidity and shading to Mozart which is only given by those born to the tradition Needless to say, this reviewer could ask for nothing else than the Artis Quartet to play this, and any Central European music here, as frequently as possible.... Harry Rolnick / South China Morning Post ...the Viennese four are a magnificent group who gave a kingly performance, opening the Dallas Chamber Music Society's second half-century... Olin Chism / The Dallas Morning News ...rather than inflame the music with dynamic extremes and distorted tempos, these musicians sought out the calmer, gentler aspects of Schubert's music- the ones that caracterize this lyrical composer's talent best... Mark Carrington / The Washington Post ...the members ot the Artis met the challenge beautifully, tailoring their sound to the ever-changing texture, always maintaining flawless intonation and sense of ensemble ...they bring back maturity, confidence, purpose and artistry. Cincinnati anticipates their next visit.. Jennifer Thomas / The Cincinnati Post ...while their style are amalgams of all that is best about Viennese musical culture, their driving force seems to come entirely from within. ..the Artis Quartet wants to be remembered for the refinement and immediacy - the perfection - of its phrasing... James Wierzbicki / St.Louis Post-Dispatch ...the Artis has most of the right stuff at its fingertips, induding a cohesive spirit and a precision-geared clarity of purpose, to be considered a prime contender in the quartet world... Josef Woodard / Los Angeles Times ..it was obvious that each musician has greatly mastered his instrument As a group, they constituted the most balanced and rich harmonisation with perfectly agreeable sensitivity... Natchar Pancharoen / Bangkok Post ...the Artis Quartet, judging from their performance on Tuesday evening, are easily among the best string quartets of the post-war generation. Every aspect ot their art is cast in pure gold: whether it be interpretation, tonal balance, technical facility or rhythmic control, this group fuses itselt into one glorious instrument... The Statesman / New Delhi ...the performance was exeptional - one ot those cases where a top quartet makes a speciality of a second rate piece making it sound twice good as it is... Tully Potter / The Strad / London ...it took no more than a few bars to assure that the Artis Quartet of Vienna was representative of the best in chamber music.. ..each artist is an accomplished soloist in his own right, a fact that was demonstrated many times during the evening. But the ensemble playing, and utmost respect for playing as one, was evident in every interpretation. The Islander / Sanibel Music Festival
