April 2008

Praised by the Washington Post for “a masterful performance of the Tchaikovsky” in which “she dominated the orchestra from the opening chords,” pianist Ying Feng has made a name for herself as an unusually powerful and deeply musical interpreter of varied repertoire, the substantial works of the Great Romantic repertoire in particular. A silver medalist and audience favorite of the 2003 William Kapell International Piano Competition, she has since embarked on a career that takes her across the United States, Europe and the Far East.

A major star in her native China, Feng began season 2006/07 with a sold-out performance of the Tchaikovsky Concerto and the Yellow River Concerto with the Shanghai Philharmonic at the Grand Theater in Shanghai, broadcast on national television and followed by appearances on two prime-time TV talk shows. In December 2007 she was invited to return to the same hall for two recitals.

The season before she was soloist in Rachmaninoff’s Paganini Rhapsody with the National Arts Centre Orchestra under Ermanno Florio in Ottawa, following an earlier success with the Houston Ballet Symphony and the same conductor. Various recitals, most notably a recital debut at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall, rounded out the season.

Other recent highlights include an appearance with the Baltimore Symphony under David Lockington, performances of Ravel’s Concerto in G and Rachmaninoff’s Third Piano Concerto with the Nouvel Ensemble Instrumental du Conservatoire de Paris, and Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini by Rachmaninoff with L’Orchestre National de France. In 2001, Feng made her highly successful European debut at the Cité de la Musique in Paris, performing Ravel’s Piano Concerto for the Left Hand under the direction of Pascal Rophé. The influential French magazine Le Monde de la Musique called her "a revelation." In the Far East, her performances of Liszt’s First Piano Concerto with the Heng Tong Philharmonic in Hong Kong and the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1 with the National Symphony of China received critical acclaim, prompting the Cultural Star, a major cultural magazine in Hong Kong, to call her “the brightest star in the world of pianists.”

In addition to receiving top honors at the William Kapell International Competition, Ying Feng has garnered prizes and awards at numerous other international competitions. She was a gold medalist at the Hong Kong International Piano Competition and a winner of China’s National Piano Competition. At the age of twenty-two, she won fourth prize at the Marguerite Long/Jacques Thibaud International Piano Competition. Maria Tipo, the jury’s chairwoman, praised her playing as “an impressive performance....a special talent that is rarely found.” In 2003 she was chosen as the winner of the Mannes College Concerto Competition, resulting in a performance at Alice Tully Hall under the baton of JoAnn Falletta. She was also the recipient of the Nadia Reisenberg Recital Award which led to her solo recital debut at Merkin Hall, subsequently broadcast on WQXR. Furthermore, she received a Blüthner grand piano from the Alfred Reinhold Foundation and a debut recording by the Meyer Foundation on its “Young Soloists” series.

Ying Feng was born in the Xinjiang Province of Northwest China. She began piano studies at age five and entered the Shanghai Conservatory of Music five years later. Continuing at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris to study with Georges Pludermacher and Jacques Rouvier, she graduated in 1999 with the gold medal. Subsequently she studied for four years with Pavlina Dokovska at the Mannes College of Music, receiving a Master’s Degree and completing the Professional Studies program. Other major influences in her artistic and pianistic development are Aldo Ciccolini and Nina Svetlanova.
