March 2008

Praised by critics for her "lush soprano" and "vocally glorious rendition" of the opera repertoire’s major roles, Alaine Rodin is quickly emerging as a young and versatile soprano on the path to a substantical career.

First coming to international attention opposite Patti Lupone (and later Dixie Carter) in Terrence McNally’s 1996 Broadway production, Masterclass, where she performed Verdi‘s aria Vieni t’affretta from Lady Macbeth, The New York Times proclaimed it was "beautifully sung by Alaine Rodin." And singing the role of Lisa in Tchaikovsky’s Pique Dame "not in the least taxed by the role’s demands, Rodin matched the beauty of her large expressive soprano with total involvement in her character’s plight, creating a moving portrayal that always rang true," according to Opera News Online.

2007/08 brings a reinvitation to Utah Festival Opera, this time in the title role of Manon Lescaut, followed by a return to the Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes in Mendelssohn’s Elijah. She concluded the previous summer season as Clara in Porgy and Bess, and Julie in Showboat with Utah Festival Opera. Ms. Rodin will be engaged under a fest contract for the next two seasons at the Landestheater in Linz, Austria.

Rodin’s busy 2006/07 season marked her debut as Donna Anna in Mozart’s Don Giovanni at Grand Rapids Opera. She also portrayed the title role of Tosca at the Belleayre Music Festival and sang the role of Lisa in The Queen of Spades at West Bay Opera. She joined noted mezzo-soprano Dolores Zajick in a benefit concert for the hurricane-ravaged New Orleans Opera. On the orchestra stage, she was heard in Verdi’s Requiem with the Sacramento Choral Society and Handel’s Messiah with the Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes.

Highlights of recent seasons included the roles of Woglinde in Wagner's Das Rheingold with New Orleans Opera, Liu in Puccini's Turandot in Guatemala City, Antonia in Massenet's Les Contes d'Hoffmann with Opera Lirico de Costa Rica, Marguerite in Gounod's Faust with Augusta Opera, and Maria in Bernstein’s West Side Story in Guatemala City. She also appeared at the Sarasota Opera and the Kyoto International Music Festival. The soprano made her European debut as Micaela in Carmen with L’Opéra Comique in Paris.

A past member of the Lyric Opera Center for American Artists with the Chicago Lyric Opera, Rodin has performed under the baton of such conductors as Zubin Mehta, Leonard Slatkin and John Nelson.

A native of Berkeley, CA, Rodin completed her musical training at the Juilliard School and The San Francisco Conservatory of Music. She has many awards to her credit, including the American Berlin Foundation Grant, Richard F. Gold Shoshanna Career Grant, NAACP-ACT-SO competition Award, First place YWCA Competition Award (New York City Division) and the Bel Canto Competition Award.
