Tenor Thomas Studebaker has established himself as a powerful young Heldentenor in demand both in opera and in concert and has appeared with some of the world’s leading conductors.

Last season, Mr. Studebaker began with a European tour of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Kurt Masur. Later in the season, the tenor repeated the work in Tokyo, Omaha and in Louisville. He also returned to Tokyo for concerts of Schönberg’s masterpiece, Gurrelieder. 2006/07 season highlights include the role of Melot in Tristan und Isolde with the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with Atlanta Symphony, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and Israel Philharmonic, and Bruch’s Moses with Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra.

During the 2004/05 season, Thomas Studebaker performed the role of Melot in performances of Tristan und Isolde, which were staged by Peter Sellars for the Los Angeles Philharmonic and conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen. He also sang Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the New York Philharmonic in a New Year’s Eve Gala as well as in London and Athens with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Kurt Masur. Additionally, he was heard in a duo recital in New York City with Christine Brewer as part of the prestigious George London Foundation recital series. In the spring, he sang the role of Waldemar in Schönberg’s Gurrelieder with the Nagoya Philharmonic, and in the summer, he sang the role of Max in Der Freischütz under Eve Queler at Carnegie Hall before traveling to Buenos Aires to make his debut at the Teatro Colón as Siegmund in Wagner’s Die Walküre. In the 2003/04 season Thomas Studebaker sang the role of Erik in Wagner’s Der Fliegende Holländer with both the Pittsburgh Opera and Opera Australia, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the Pittsburgh Symphony and the Missa Solmnis with the London Philharmonic Orchestra under Kurt Masur.

Other notable engagements in recent seasons include performances of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with both the New York Philharmonic (both on tour in Asia with Kurt Masur, and in new York City under Lorin Maazel) and the Westdeutscher Rundfunk under Semyon Bychkov in Cologne. For his debut with Lyric Opera of Chicago in the autumn of 2002, he sang Siegmund in Die Walküre; he performed Narraboth in Salome with Florida Grand Opera and debuted as Macduff in Macbeth with Opera Company of Philadelphia. In the summer of 2003, he sang Erik in concert performances of Der Fliegende Holländer for his San Francisco Symphony debut under Michael Tilson Thomas and returned to Seattle Opera for Parsifal. Additionally, he has also performed Siegmund in Die Walküre with New Orleans Opera, sung concert performances of Melot in Act II of Tristan und Isolde in 2002 under Kurt Masur with the New York Philharmonic (debut), sung Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the Nashville Symphony and Narraboth in Salome with the Seattle Opera.

Additionally, Mr. Studebaker has performed Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony under Edo de Waart with the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra at the Concertgebouw, Tichon in Katya Kabanova with L’Opéra de Montréal and with Florida Grand Opera. He has sung Parsifal in Act II of Parsifal with the Cincinnati Symphony, Siegmund in Act I of Die Walküre with the Richmond Symphony Orchestra, and Froh in Das Rhingold with the Seattle Opera. He has performed Schönberg’s Gurrelieder at the Bard Music Festival, Narraboth in Salome for his debut with L’Opéra de Montréal, Melot in Tristan und Isolde with the Metropolitan Opera, Erik in Der Fliegende Holländer with the Sarasota Opera, and The Drum Major in Wozzeck with Teatro Municipal de Santiago.

Thomas Studebaker joined the Metropolitan opera Young Artist Development Program in the 1996/97 season, and has performed several roles with that company including Heinrich der Schreiber in Tannhäuser, Melot in Tristan und Isolde, Count of Lerma in Don Carlo, Ruiz in Il Trovatore, First Noble in Lohengrin, the First Armed Man in Die Zauberflöte and Moser in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg.

Other highlights include his Santa Fe Opera debut in the summer of 1998 as Narraboth in Salome; Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with Edo de Waart and the Sydney Symphony on tour in Los Angeles, Orlando, and New York; Siegmund in the first act of Wagner’s Die Walküre opposite soprano Deborah Voigt as part of a Boston Lyric Opera Gala Concert, and appearances in Banff and Montréal, Canada, as the Drum Major in Berg’s Wozzeck. He has also performed with Lake George Opera Festival and the European Center for Opera and Vocal Arts in Ghent, Belgium. Originally a baritone, Mr. Studebaker made his debut as tenor in the Opera Theatre of St. Louis 20th Anniversary Gala in the spring of 1995. He made his Metropolitan Opera debut in September 1997 as the Officer in Ariadne auf Naxos.

A graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music and Illinois State University, Mr. Studebaker was chosen by the Opera Theatre of St. Louis as the recipient of a grant from the Richard Gaddes Fund for Young Singers, and was awarded a Robert M. Jacobson Study Grant from the Richard Tucker Music Foundation in 1996. During the spring of 1998, Mr. Studebaker also received the Kirsten Flagstad Memorial Award from the George London Foundation and a Career Grant from the Richard Ticker Music Foundation. In addition, Mr. Studebaker teaches on the voice faculty of Belmont University.
