b i o g r a p h y...........back to roster....up November 2005 Chinese bass Sun Yu is the first-prize winner of the 2001 Liederkranz Foundation’s Wagnerian Voice Competition. His performance as Chou Hu in the U.S. premiere of Jing Shan’s Savage Land was highly praised by the Washington Post’s Joseph McLellan as “Sun Yu’s charisma, polished powerful voice and versatility as both a dramatic and comedic performer.” Also in another article, “Star Turns from China”, concerning Mr. Yu’s performance as the title role in Verdi’s Attila, the same critic wrote: “Sunday night, he sounded like a potential Boris Christoff. There is no higher compliment in my vocabulary for a bass-baritone.” Season 2003/04 included an engagement as Bonze in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly with Virginia Opera, the role of Ramfis in Fresno Opera’s production of Verdi’s Aida and the role of Sacristan in a concert performance of Puccini’s Tosca with the Springfield Symphony, Mass. Recently, Sun Yu returned to Virginia Opera as Timur in Puccini’s Turandot and repeated the role in different productions with Opera Pacific, Hawaii Opera and Fresno Grand Opera. He also performed as Scarpia in Tosca with the International Opera Alliance of George Mason University and as Il Re in Aida with Opera Columbus. Major engagements in season 2002/03 included the role of Commendatore in the Dallas Opera production of Mozart’s Don Giovanni as well as his portrayal of Ramfis in concert, as part of the cast of Aida, with the Springfield Symphony. In seasons 2000/01 and 1999/00, Sun Yu appeared with the Washington Opera singing the roles of Amfortas in Wagner’s Parsifal, Timur in Turandot, King Philip in Verdi’s Don Carlo, as well as Bonze in Madama Butterfly. Sun Yu’s Western operatic debut was the role of Hermit in the New York Opera Orchestra’s 1990 production of Weber’s Der Freischuetz. Since then he has also performed outside the United States, namely, in France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, and Italy. He has performed over twenty operatic roles in six languages, among them being Zaccaria in Verdi’s Nabucco at Portugal’s National San Carlo Opera in 1995, the role of Ramfis in Aida at the Opera Bergen, Norway, in 1996, and the title role in Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov at the Wuerzburg Stadttheater, Germany, in 1997. While studying at Peabody, he has won a variety of prestigious awards such as the Young Artist Award at the 35th Concours International de Chant de la Ville in Toulouse, France, the 2nd Prize at the 1989 Concours International de Verviers, Belgium, and the Silver Medal in 1990 at the Min-on International Music Competition in Japan. Mr. Sun Yu was born in Shanghai and received his Bachelor Degree in Music from the Beijing Central Conservatory of Music in 1983. In 1988, Mr. Sun came to the United States to continue his study in voice and opera under Professor William Ray at the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore. Mr. Yu is also a writer.
